We're Going Back to the British Open — Milnrow Band Win the 2026 Grand Shield

There are moments in a band's history that stop you in your tracks. Moments that make everything — the rehearsals, the commitment, the hours given by players, conductors, and supporters alike — feel entirely worth it. Sunday 3rd May 2026 was one of those moments.

Milnrow Band are Grand Shield Champions.

At an unusually sun-drenched Birmingham Town Hall, in one of the most prestigious events in the entire brass band calendar, Milnrow Band took to the stage and delivered a performance of Stephen Roberts' magnificent test piece Star Crossed Lovers — a dramatic, emotionally charged work drawn from Prokofiev's iconic ballet Romeo & Juliet — that left adjudicators Stephen Roberts and Anne Crookston in no doubt.

When the results were read out, Milnrow stood proudly at the top of a field of twenty bands that included some of the finest ensembles in the country.

First place. Grand Shield Champions 2026.

The Grand Shield is the gateway to the summit of British banding. The top two finishers earn their place at the British Open Championship at Symphony Hall, Birmingham in September — one of only two contests in the world that every Championship-section band aspires to win. Milnrow Band will be there.

Runners-up Hepworth Band will join us at Symphony Hall, with Desford Colliery (3rd), Rothwell Temperance (4th), and The GUS Band (5th) completing a fiercely competitive top five. The standard was exceptional throughout, which makes what Milnrow achieved all the more remarkable.

A Homecoming Eleven Years in the Making

For those who know the band's story, this win carries extraordinary weight. Milnrow last qualified for the British Open in 2017 — a year already celebrated as one of the finest in the band's history, when we also reached the finals of the National Championships and achieved our highest-ever placing at the Royal Albert Hall. Before that, the band competed at the British Open for five consecutive years following our first Grand Shield win in 2013.

Now we're back — and this time, we've earned it in the hardest possible way, facing down twenty of the best bands in the land on one of banding's biggest stages.

Representing Milnrow, Rochdale, and the Pennines

Since 1869, Milnrow Band has been part of the fabric of this community. From those early days in the foothills of the Pennines, through mergers, name changes, and shifting fortunes, one thing has never changed: this is a local band, rooted in a local community, carrying the name of Milnrow wherever music takes us.

That's what makes Sunday's victory so special. When we walked onto that stage at Birmingham Town Hall, we didn't just carry instruments — we carried 157 years of history, and the pride of every person in Milnrow and the surrounding Rochdale community who has ever supported this band.

Championship-section brass banding is a world of professional musicians, full-time conductors, and corporate sponsorship. Milnrow's place within it — and our ability to compete and win at this level — speaks to something genuinely extraordinary about the people who make this band what it is.

Taking the band to represent the community at these national events is always a financial challenge, made easier this time, thanks to a grant from #penninestownship at Rochdale Borough Council We are very grateful for the contribution to our craft.

The Road to September

The British Open at Symphony Hall, Birmingham takes place in September 2026. Between now and then, there is work to be done — but there is also cause for celebration. We invite every member of our community to share in this achievement.

To every player, every conductor and musical director past and present, every committee member, volunteer, supporter, and family member who has given their time to this band — this is for you.
