Malachy Cullen
Bass Trombone
Malachy joined Milnrow Band in December 2025 and brings the firepower on bass trombone. The journey started at the age of eight, all because the slide on a trombone looked funny. That curiosity soon turned into a serious hobby, and Malachy later moved to bass trombone for the joy of playing the lowest, growliest notes in the band.
A major highlight so far has been performing Gavin Higgins’ Concerto Grosso with the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain and the National Youth Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall in London – a dream combination of players, music and venue.
With Milnrow, Malachy’s memories are currently very festive. Having so far only played Christmas concerts with the band, all three outings of “Frosty the Snowman” are firmly etched into the brain.
Outside the notes on the page, Malachy enjoys the lighter side of banding life, including time spent at the working men’s club after rehearsals – though the Sambuca is firmly on the “approach with caution” list.
Away from music, Malachy loves travelling and is always on the lookout for the next adventure, ideally done as cheaply as possible so there is more left over for instruments and gigs.
